World in a Cell VR

Synopsis

The human body remains a fascinating labyrinth of complexity that scientists are still unraveling; every bit as captivating and mysterious as the vast expanse of the universe. As scientific exploration of this Inner Space continues, it is critical that we develop new tools of communication and representation.

In 2017, teams from the USC Bridge Institute at the Michelson Center for Convergent Biosciences, and the World Building Media Lab at USC Media Arts + Practice Division of Cinematic Arts began the first initiative of the Inner Space project: World In A Cell. Combining the rigor and precision of science and design, the Inner Space artscientists are creating a world inside a single Pancreatic Beta Cell. In addition to making complex scientific concepts approachable, this post-disciplinary project is facilitating collaborations that advance our understanding of the complex inner workings of the human body.
